The Senate Adhoc Committee on Power on Thursday said it had unravelled how some staff of the Bureau of Public Enterprises, who were Board members of Generation Companies and Distribution Companies, were allegedly lured with Prado Jeeps and Land Cruiser Jeeps to suppress Nigeria’s interest.
The Chairman of the Committee, Senator Abubakar Kyari, made this known during the Day 2 of the investigative hearing on the power sector.
Kyari said: “I have the protection of the Senate to say what we have gathered.
“There are some staff of the Bureau of Public Enterprises that are board members of Generation Companies and Distribution Companies who were given Prado and Land Cruiser Jeeps.
“They are conniving with the both Gencos and Discos.”

Corroborating the revelation of the Kyari, Senator Aliyu Abdullahi, who is also a member of the Committee, lamented the development.
Abdullahi said while the BPE is negotiating for the country, it needs to be technically and morally responsible to it, adding: “It seems that the BPE is shortchanging the country.”
In his response, the Director General of the BPE, Benjamin Diki, said: “We are there to protect Nigerians.
“What companies are paying or have given to their board members as privileges should be referred to the respective companies.
“Whether the privileges is right or not I don’t know.
“I take exception that we have shortchanged the government.
“We balanced the interest of government and investors because what we are looking for is investment.
“We need to create an enabling environment for the business to thrive.”

A day after administering oaths of office on his ministers, President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday warned all permanent secretaries against sabotage.
President Buhari was speaking at the Council Chambers of the Aso Rock Presidential Villa in Abuja shortly after swearing in 16 of the 18 newly appointed permanent secretaries.
He noted that ministers and other government officials involved in policy formulation and implementation often complained of the intolerable levels of incompetence, indifference or even suspected sabotage by some of the top echelon of the civil service.
Those sworn in included Mrs. Ayotunde Adesugba, Mr. Taiwo Abidogun, Dr. Bukar Hassan, Mrs. Wakama Belema Asifieka, Mr. Jalal Ahmad Arabi, Mr. Sabiu Zakari, Mrs. Obiageli Phyllis Nwokedi, Mr. Aminu Nabegu and Mr. Alo Williams Nwankwo, Dr. Shehu Ahmed, Mr. Ogbonnaya Innocent Kalu, Mrs. Nuratu Jimoh Batagarawa, Mr. Christian Chinyeaka Ohaa, Mr. Bassey Apkanyung, Mr. Louis Edozien and Dr. Ugo Roy.
Permanent Secretaries Bamgbose Olukunle Oladele (Political Affairs Office, Office of the Secretary General of the Federation) and Mahmoud Isa-Dutse (Finance Ministry) were absent at the swearing-in ceremony because they were abroad for official duties.
According to Buhari, even where permanent secretaries, in some instances, are exempted from these accusations, they are still responsible and liable for failing to provide the required leadership, control and direction.
President Buhari also cautioned that his government would not tolerate any form of excesses, indifference, incompetence, and corrupt practices from civil servants.
Buhari explained that rather than subject the newly appointed permanent secretaries to written and oral examinations, he adopted a more rigorous selection process.
This process, he said, entailed vigorous screening of their past records, potential and capacity for holding the office as well as integrity, honesty and sense of commitment.
He expressed belief that the new selection technique would have “brought up to light some of the best, dedicated, patriotic and hardworking civil Servants to hold this position of trust.”
The president also said he hoped that the new permanent secretaries’ subsequent conduct and performance would not prove his administration wrong.
He said the responsibilities bestowed on the new permanent secretaries are so enormous that the success or otherwise of the government would largely depend on their competence, ability and capacity to discharge their duties most effectively and efficiently.
According to him, while permanent secretaries are the chief advisers to their respective ministers; not only are they responsible for safeguarding public funds and ensuring the propriety of expenditures under their control, but they are also responsible for coordinating their respective bureaucracies as well as ensuring effective implementation of all approved government programmes and policies.
The president said his administration and the civil service could thus develop a constructive partnership in charting a course for the change Nigerians were looking forward to.

Trixie is the second Filipino to win Miss International Queen, which began in 2004. Kevin Balot took home the crown in 2012.
The beauty queen, who also won the Philippines pageant Miss Gay Manila this year, graduated from the University of the Philippines with a degree in European languages, and also plays the violin.
Donning a red sequin gown and bright red lipstick, Trixie beamed as she was given the sparkly tiara and gold trophy.

On Thursday, 10 officers of the Nigerian Prison Service at Kuje Prison brutally beat a reporter for Vanguard Newspaper, Mr. Emmanuel Elebeke, outside the FCT High Court in the Maitama District of Abuja.

According to Vanguard Newspaper, the attack occurred at 2 PM on the premises of Court 2 of the FCT High Court. Mr. Elebeke took several photos of six suspects in the murder case of Anthony Eze.
According to media reports, Mr. Elebeke’s actions provoked a strong reaction from the prison officials present. Several officials descended upon the journalist demanded his camera and questioned his right to take photos despite the fact that the pictures were taken outside the court, and were, therefore, legal.
After Mr. Elebeke refused to surrender his camera, the officials allegedly began to beat him, while demanding he give it up.
According to Vanguard Newspaper, Mr. Elebeke was eventually handcuffed by one prison official while another hit him with the butt of his gun.
The brutal attack did not end until the prison officials were able to wrestle Mr. Elebeke’s camera away from him. The officials then sped off with the camera in a prison bus with the registration number PS635A01.
Mr. Elebeke was left with injuries to his legs and body as a result of this vicious beating.
The prison officials maintained that Mr. Elebeke should not have taken the photos, and refuse to return the camera claiming it is now “evidence”.
When the judge of the murder case, Justice Garba Salisu, learned of the attack he allegedly faulted the behavior of the prison officials.
A Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Mr. Paul Ella, condemned the attack, and insisted that the prison officers be brought to justice.
In a conversation with Vanguard Newspaper, he stated that “we as a union will investigate the case in full and make sure that the perpetrators are brought to justice. We will do everything within our power to ensure that this attack does not repeat itself.”

Also arrested in connection with the crime are two other women: Ogechi Njoku and Patience Nwaogbo Ego, the police said.
Mrs. Obi on November 4 carried the baby on public transport from Imo State to Oshodi, Lagos, where she was arrested courtesy of a vigilant driver who had noticed an irregular relationship between the woman and the baby she carried with her.
The driver of the bus reportedly noticed that throughout their journey, the woman did not breastfeed the infant despite its noticeable expression of hunger. He duly informed the police upon their arrival in Lagos, and she was apprehended.
During the investigation, the police said she at first insisted she was the mother of the baby, only to later confess to having received it from her aunt in Imo for delivery to a recipient in Lagos. Although she denied receiving money for what she did, the police said they traced a transaction of N1.01m to the persons involved in the baby transfer.
Parading Mrs. Obi and briefing the press at the State Command, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Owoseni Fatai, said that the other suspects bolted when they got wind of the arrest of Mrs. Obi.
The police also disclosed that Mrs. Obi’s phone rang during her interrogation, but as they picked it to announce her arrest, the caller immediately hung up and shut off their phone and became unreachable. The police said the caller is suspected to be involved with her in the sale of babies and may have escaped upon realizing the apprehension of their associate.
According to the police, Mrs. Obi has four children in Lagos, but the infant found with her was not one of them.
