Next week, striking Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics lecturers may embark on a "massive protest" in the nation's capital Abuja. ASUP president Chibuzor Asomugha declared their intentions while speaking on a radio program on Friday morning.
Mr. Asomugha was a guest at Ray Power FM on their Political Platform broadcast.
He observed that the last meeting between the government representatives and the striking lecturers was held on March 26 in Abuja. Since then, the Union president said, they had not heard from the authorities.
Mr. Asomugha said it was agreed at the last meeting that the government delegation would brief President Goodluck Jonathan and come up with a "Memorandum of Understanding" that would soon be signed by both parties.
Although the Union president did not specify the date of the protest, he indicated that market women, students, lecturers and labour unions concerned with how the federal government was treating polytechnic education in Nigeria would take part in it.
He, however, added that the Union is still seeking an amicable solution to the situation and had appealed to Senate President David Mark, and the Speaker of the House of Representatives Aminu Tambuwal for their intervention. Senate President Mark promised to look into the matter after conclusion of work on the 2014 budget. The budget was passed by the Senate on Wednesday and by the House on Thursday.
On strike for six months
ASUP has been on strike since October 3, 2013, with an initial 13 demands that were negotiated to four: the need for a constitution of the Governing Councils of Federal Polytechnics, the migration of the lower cadres on the CONTISS 15 salary scale, the release of the White Paper on the Visitations to Federal Polytechnics, and the need for the commencement of the Needs Assessment of Nigerian Polytechnics.
On March 27, Acting Education Minister Emeka Wogu declared that the Federal Government and ASUP had agreed on three issues, with the installment payment being the non-resolved one.
He explained that if ASUP had accepted the offer of two installments, the first payment would have been made in March, while the second would be in November. Arrears for both ASUP and COEASU were over N40 billion, and such an amount could not be paid at once.
The lecturers had previously refused the two-installment proposal, something they have now agreed to, with the first installments to be paid in April.
The ASUP president Asomugha added the lecturers are not moved by the government's No work, No pay policy, saying their salaries have not been paid since March. Indeed, a government circular issued on March 21 had directed the stoppage of the salaries of the polytechnic lecturers.
Also, the ASUP National Publicity secretary Clement Chirman insisted that the Union is not bothered by the policy and would continue to strike until outstanding issues are resolved.
A new findings carried out by some experts have shown that texting and using mobile devices for long periods of time could lead to a lower life expectancy.
Chiropractic experts believe the hunching posture adopted by phone or tablet users can cause breathing problems, leading to cardiovascular issues later in life and a higher risk of death in older age.
According to the study done by the UK United Chiropractic Association (UCA), poor posture could pose as big a risk to a person's health as obesity.
The research also detected a link between forward-leaning postures people use while texting, going online, sending e-mails and playing videogames, and hyperkyphosis, which is associated with pulmonary disease and cardiovascular problems.
The research suggests that when someone drops their head and rounds their shoulders while looking at a phone or tablet, it is harder for them to take a full breath because of the restriction to their muscles.
In addition, the ribs can't move properly so the heart and lungs cannot function to their full effectiveness.
More often than not, people do not know they could be doing serious long-term damage to their body because the short-term effects are not as noticeable, the study says.
* Findings say lying awkwardly while using a mobile device is dangerous to health
It added that it is only in later life that the effects can seriously affect quality of life.
This has increased fears that younger people, who are society's biggest users of smartphones and tablets, could be knocking years off of their life expectancy.
Elderly folk with a slight amount of hyperkyphosis have a much higher risk of mortality when compared with those without it.
This is similar to the increase in risk of death from having a body mass index greater than 30, according to the UCA's figures.
The research recommends to people to get their posture checked by a chiropractor to make sure it is correct and not giving them any potential negative health effects.
Definition
Hyperkyphosis is a spinal deformity that looks like a forward-curved posture of the head, upper back or thoracic spine - known as a hunchback.
It is identified when the curvature of the spine is more than 40 degrees.
The worsening of the condition over time is associated with a higher risk of health problems later in life.
Causes
Hyperkyphosis can result from conditions such as osteoporosis or thinning bones, as well as fractures of the vertebrae that result from thin bones.
However, there are several suspected causes for the spinal deformity when vertebral fractures are not present.
Hyperkyphosis may result from poor habitual posture, muscle weakness, degenerative disc disease, ligament degeneration, or hereditary factors.
Effects
Difficulty breathing, despite no history of lung or heart disease.
Lessening of the distance between the lowest ribs and the pelvic bones.
Pulmonary problems caused by increased strain on the heart muscle.
European football governing body, UEFA has given Atletico Madrid's goal keeper, Thibaut Courtois the green light to face Chelsea in the Champions League semi final.
UEFA made the decision before the two teams were drawn against each other in the Champions League semi-finals draws held few minutes ago, warning the Blues on their demand of £5million before the Spanish club could play the on-loan goalkeeper
According to UEFA, the contractual clause Chelsea is holding on unto is against the rules.
* Courtois, right, has been cleared to play against Chelsea
Cash-strapped Atletico would have struggled to find the money for the fee, but this has now been ruled out by the governing body.
A statement from UEFA said: 'The integrity of sporting competition is a fundamental principle for UEFA.
"Both the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA disciplinary regulations contain clear provisions which strictly forbid any club to exert, or attempt to exert, any influence whatsoever over the players that another club may (or may not) field in a match.
"It follows that any provision in a private contract between clubs which might function in such a way as to influence who a club fields in a match is null, void and unenforceable so far as UEFA is concerned.
"Furthermore, any attempt to enforce such a provision would be a clear violation of both the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA disciplinary regulations and would therefore be sanctioned accordingly."
The Chelsea keeper has been on loan at Atletico for three seasons but the Madrid club's president, Enrique Cerezo, told Spanish radio after the quarter-final triumph over Barcelona they would be 'unable to pay' the added fees which were part of the loan agreement.
Courtois, 21, who will represent Belgium at the summer World Cup, has yet to play for Chelsea, although he has been earmarked as Petr Cech's successor.
He has impressed in Atletico's bid for a Champions League and La Liga double after joining Chelsea from Belgian club Genk in 2011 when just 18.
The other Champions League semi-final sees Real Madrid face holders Bayern Munich.

How are the hottest chilis determined? Believe it or not, the most common test involves human taste-testers. In the "Scoville Organoleptic Test", chili extract is diluted in sugar water until the heat of its spice is no longer detectable to a panel of tasters. The resulting heat rating, measured in Scoville heat units (SHU), is a measure of how much the chili had to be diluted.
1. Carolina Reaper - 2,200,000 SHU

"The police should have been informed, so that adequate measures could be taken for a security cover," he said.
Activities at the Niger State Abdulkareem Lafene Secretariat in Tunga, area of Minna, were grounded for hours Monday following the sighting of an object suspected to be bomb purportedly planted at the entrance of the Office of the Head of Service (HOS).
Civil Servants and visitors to the complex ran for their dear lives at the spread of the discovery.
‪The object, a metallic cylinder filled with dirty materials was placed upside down on the way leading to the block which also housed Ministry of Local Government, Community Development and Chieftaincy Affairs and the State Economic Commission.

The Peoples Democratic Party said it was ready to offer free technical assistance to the opposition All Progressive Congress on how to organise itself in a democratic setting.
Olisa Metuh
The ruling party said it in a statement issued on Monday in Abuja by its National Publicity Secretary Olisa Metuh.
Metuh said that the proposed help would include the conduct of transparent and credible congress following APC's weekend postponed ward congress which he described as embarrassment to democracy.
"We know the history of this party and the pedigree of its leaders will hardly yield to democracy, but we are confident that our assistance is handy here," reads the statement in part.
Metuh said that the PDP had held successful congresses and national conventions where party members were allowed level play ground to pursue their ambitions irrespective of sectional, religious and ethnic affiliations.
"It is an irony that a party that daily claims it is on a mission to rescue Nigeria could not conduct its own congress," he said.
He added that the APC had no business in a democracy saying that it should be honourable enough to commence the process of its own disbandment, having experienced massive hitches in its congress.
Congress postponed over logistics problems
The APC ward congresses in Kano State was shifted to Wednesday, April 9, the Chairman of the committee for overseeing the conduct of the exercise, Mustapha Inuwa, said on Sunday.
He said the delay was caused by the late arrival of materials and officials.
"It was not possible to conduct the congress on Saturday as earlier planned because of logistics problems encountered not only in Kano State but across the country," he said.
Victor Ndoma-Egba
Senate leader, legislator representing Cross River State Central region, Victor Ndoma-Egba (SAN) prompted Nigerian authorities and security agencies to look into allegations of the Boko Haram terrorist sect using chemical weapons to kill Benue State residents.
The lawmaker spoke in Calabar, Cross River State, while receiving the Allround best lawmaker award presented by postgraduate students of the University of Calabar.
He urged Nigerian security agencies to undertake a thorough investigation into such claims, warning that the issue could take a frightening scale among Nigeria's current security challenges. He said the security agencies must get to the root of the allegations and take adequate measures to address the issue.
He also commended the Federal Government for the measures taken to curb the Boko Haram activities, but added, however, that the Joint Task Force must intensify their campaign.
It would be recalled that first concerns were raised by authorities of Benue State who alleged that Boko Haram insurgents, disuised as Fulani herdsmen, used chemical substances to kill over 200 residents of the state. Then, Director General of National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control maintained he saw chemical weapons being stored in canister shells.
One of the female delegates of the National Conference currently being held in Abuja suggested the new law providing for castration of rape convicts.
Lamenting that hundreds of Nigerian women are raped in the country every day, Ondo State representative Yemi Fasominu urged authorities to take serious steps in order to prevent the situation from worsening.
According to her, women need special protection from the government, which is "a law that will castrate men who are convicted of rape".
The suggestion was followed by immediate reaction of other conference attendees: some of them laughed, some murmured and made side comments on the matter.
After speaking on some other relevant issues, Yemi Fasominu concluded her speech calling for equity, justice and fair play for all Nigerians irrespective of their backgrounds and religious leanings.
The Federal Government has reviewed the report by a Presidential committee set up to analyse Nigeria's ministries, departments, and agencies, MDAs.
According to a white paper, which became available on April 7, 2014, Monday, FG approved the merger of three aviation agencies: Nigeria Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NIMET).
The mentioned agencies will form the Federal Civil Aviation Authority (FCAA).
The second decision will allow the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) to specify the tenure of its Chief Executive Officer, in order to conform to those of other agencies.
However some of the proposals were rejected. They included:
a) merger of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) with the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission (ICPC) and the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB).
b) merger of the Nigeria Television Authority (NTA), the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) and the Voice of Nigeria (VON).
с) merger of three examination bodies, WAEC, NECO, and NABTEB.
It also noted that the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), will continue as central examination body for university admissions.
The Presidential Committee on the Rationalisation and Restructuring of Federal Government Parastatals, Commissions and Agencies is headed by a former Head of Service, Stephen Orosanye. Last year the committee worked on the concept to optimize research agencies under the Ministry of Science and Technology, and many other spheres.
Borno State governor Kashim Shettima criticized media reports alleging that military are linked with Boko Haram.
The mentioned reports, which have recently gone viral, credit to an unknown Nigeria soldier, who was heard on the Hausa Service broadcast of the Voice of America claiming that top military leaders were working in tandem with Boko Haram.
Reacting to the story Governor Shettima said:
"Of all conspiracy theories being alleged of the Boko Haram, the most dangerous, as far as I'm concerned, is to raise such grievous suspicion around our security forces. When citizens grow such suspicion and believe in it, I'm afraid, Boko Haram can light fireworks to celebrate a grand victory of setting up citizens against the security agencies."
Expressing his confidence in the security sources fighting against terrorism in the troubled regions, the governor urged Nigerians to understand that faced with the insurgency, the security agencies are all the country has and asked people to respect the work they are doing.
"I know the number of military men, police men and women as well as para-military men and women, among them commanders in the military and senior police officers, who sacrificed their lives in the fight against our unfortunate insurgency problems in Borno, which also obtains in some parts of Nigeria."
Stressing that terrorists will do everything possible to cause confusion, the official asked people not to yield to manipulations and not to lose focus.
According to him, is it also very important for the media to work in cooperation with the military and Nigerians, because raising unneeded suspicion can only lead to disintegration, which can be used by the terrorists for their advantage.
Nowadays, it's very easy to get tricked when you have to decide whether this food is healthy for your body or as bad as a candy bar.
Try to nix these five common foods from your regular diet and work in the healthier alternatives instead:
1. Sushi
Fish has healthy omega-3 fatty acids and can be high in protein. Rice is a healthy grain. This has to be good, right? Don't let that alluring combo and the small rolls sway you into ordering just anything on the menu. Some common dinners like shrimp tempura can come in at well over 500 calories-for one roll. (And who eats just one?)
What to do: Avoid changed versions of sushi. These are often covered in sauces like spicy mayo, filled with cream cheese like you find in the "Philadelphia Roll," or fried-usually labeled as "tempura" or "crunchy." Instead stick with "sashimi," which is fish without rice and no sauces. Or if you want the rice, nigiri is the same piece of fish with just a bit of rice underneath. While you're at it, stick to the better fish varieties like salmon, mackerel, and tuna-all rich in heart healthy omega-3 fats and protein.
2. Yogurt
Often called "fruit on the bottom" yogurt, most popular brands on your supermarket shelf offer as much sugar as a can of soda. For example, a helping of Dannon Blueberry Fruit on the Bottom has more calories (140) and just as much sugar (25g) as a 250 ml can of Coke. Certainly nothing smart about starting your day with that much sugar.
What to do: Instead, try some cottage cheese. With 13 grams of protein per 1/2 cup, you'll be hard-pressed to find any food that packs that much protein in such a small serving-including most Greek yogurts. Top it with some fruit, a dash of cinnamon, and you've got a great breakfast.
3. Juicing
It's pushed as a healthy way to load up on vitamins and minerals. Unfortunately juicing also means you miss out on all the healthy associated fiber found in fruits since the skin is often removed before the juicing process.
What to do: Make a healthy smoothie that blends the entire fruit and/or vegetable so you not only get those vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients along with the fiber. Add a scoop of whey protein, blend in some dairy milk, unsweetened almond milk, or water and you'll have a perfect breakfast energy drink for on the go.
4. Granola
Often billed as healthy on the package, granola packs a whole lot of calories in a very small serving. Even worse-since very few people eat just 1/2 cup, which is the typical serving-that seemingly good for you granola can start to approach 500 calories when you down it by the fistful, without the milk or anything else. These packs can also be full of extra sugar and fat.
What to do: Try this simple recipe for "mason jar blueberry sewn oats." Add 1/2 cup rolled oats to a jar, top with 1-cup dairy or unsweetened almond milk, add a few raisins, some blueberries, 1 scoop of unflavored whey protein, and a dash of cinnamon. Put on the lid, pop it in the fridge overnight, and enjoy in the morning for a breakfast that will provide the right amount of oomph.
5. Granola bars
This alternative to a morning breakfast or afternoon energy pick-me-up is often nothing more than carb-dense sugar bomb that offers very little in terms of sustainable energy or satiating protein. Even something like a Nature Valley Maple Brown Sugar bar is nearly 200 calories with only 4 grams of protein.
What to do: For a quick easy option on the go, make a dozen hard-boiled eggs on a Sunday to enjoy throughout the week. Take the time to peel them when they're done cooking, then you can simply grab a couple with a piece of fruit when headed out the door in the morning. The protein in the eggs will help fill you up, and the fruit offers fiber and other important nutrients that blow away the little chunks of "fruit" found in many bars.
When the National Stadium in Surulere, Lagos was built in 1972, it was regarded as one of the best stadia in Africa.
With initial capacity of 55,000, reduced to 45, 000 in 1999, the stadium is a multi-purpose stadium used for various sporting events but mostly for football matches.
It hosted several international competitions including the 1980 African Cup of Nations final, the 2000 African Cup of Nations final, and FIFA World Cup qualifying matches. It also served as the main stadium for the 1973 All-Africa Games.
For unknown reasons, the once beautiful stadium has been left to dilapidate since 2002.
It last hosted a national team game in 2004. It is now occasionally used for religious gathering and has been taken over by area boy and squatters.
In January, President Goodluck Jonathan, through former Minister of Sports, Bolaji Abdullahi, announced the concession of the stadium to private investors, claiming it was a move to salvage the dire state of the edifice.
However, a visit to the stadium recently showed that it is in coma, with broken doors, poor state of the football pitch, bad state of the roofs over the spectators stand among others which put the stadium in its deprived state.
Below are some of the photos of the remains of the stadium:
It is hoped that those in authorities would do something to salvage this national edifice that used to be the pride of the nation before it is too late.
The showdown of 2013/14 English Premier League is getting closer. TOP-3 teams are separated by 4 points only, so, the battle for the title will be tough, however, without Arsenal.
Gunners' manager, Arsene Wenger, has admitted that it will be difficult for his side to finish in the top four after a 3-0 defeat to Everton. What a turn of events! Two months ago Jose Moruinho said that Arsenal were the favourites to win EPL title, but now they hope for finishing fourth only.
Liverpool secured a ninth straight win in the Premier League. They are currently on top of the EPL table with five games remaining.
Manchester United showed great performance in a match against Newcastle United. This would definitely boost their morale ahead of Wednesday's clash with Bayern Munich which suffered first Bundesliga defeat since October 2012.

Samuel Eto'o, on Monday returned to training after he suffered hamstring injury during a 6-0 victory over Arsenal.
Eto'o, could be available for Chelsea's clash with Paris Saint-Germain, although he remains a major doubt for the UEFA Champions League showdown at Stamford Bridge.
However, Mourinho is keen to have some added firepower at his disposal as the Blues look to overturn a 3-1 deficit from the first leg, and received a boost on the eve of Tuesday's game as Eto'o came through a training session.
Mourinho had previously indicated over the weekend that he would be prepared to take a calculated gamble on Eto'o.
'Will Eto'o be fit? Let's see. Let's see if he trains on Monday. Maybe he could play but to risk a player you need to have minimum conditions to take that risk," explained Mourinho.
"If you think he's going to be out after 10 minutes of the game you can't take that risk. If there is a minimum of risk, then yes.
"We need to score goals. If we don't score a minimum of two goals we are out. We know that, so if we can have everybody available who can give us a chance to score goals then let's do that."

Mourinho also has problems in midfield, with Ramires suspended and Nemanja Matic ineligible, but he believes Chelsea can complete an 'almost impossible' mission.
'Am I nervous about the match? No,' said Mourinho. 'I'd have been nervous if we'd won 1-0 or 2-0 in Paris, but losing 3-1 means I am not nervous. I want to enjoy the game, I want to enjoy the fight, I want to enjoy the risk. So, no nerves.
"A big game, an almost impossible job - so let's go.
"What's important is that they give everything, that they leave nothing on the field. PSG as a club don't have the experience we do."
There has been different talks about revolution in Nigeria. A Newspaper reporter, Jonah Nwokpoku has however, shared his own opinion.
Since the uprisings and violent protests that have rocked some Arab nations 2011, some people had feared that such would be replicated in Nigeria, with the level of corruption across the country and the impunity with which our politicians loot the treasury.
It has been said over the years that Nigeria is a time-bomb, a keg of powder waiting for a devastating explosion.
However, all that has remained a sheer optimism. Revolution, a violent one, is the most unlikely thing that will ever happen in this country. Unfortunately, the only set of people that are aware of this sad reality are politicians.
The reason is simple. The youths who usually get angry and resort to violent protests that end in revolution are in deep slumber.
There could be variety of reasons for this state of acute inactivity but the chief among them is the poor quality of education that they have been fed with.
For instance, the Nigeria Immigration Service recruitment test incident.
Over half a million graduates gathered write a test for less than five thousand job slots, and they were confident and comfortable with it that they would trample themselves to death.
This was a clear indication that the education that has been given to these young people is bereft of any fibre of quality.
The Immigration Service recruitment test exercise provided the most disappointing clue that change cannot come from our youths. Each of the applicants reportedly paid one thousand Naira and purchased a white T-shirt, too.
As if that was not enough, due to the shoddy arrangement by the organisers, there were stampedes at various venues of the event leading to the death of about 21 applicants.
The revolutionary minded people were so sure that that was the moment. They were so certain that the sun would not set on Nigeria that day without the people rising to demand for a drastic change.
But what followed was the usual condemnations, complaints and bulk passing between the government agencies involved. The youths did nothing rather than curse politicians under their breathe.
The truth is, there will never be a revolution in Nigeria. Who would lead the revolution? What more can inspire it?
As a matter of fact, those who continue to hope that one day there will be a revolution in Nigeria will continue to be disappointed.
In other climes, that people rose to demand for change, it was inspired by the young people who could no longer stomach endless corruption that rendered their future hopeless.
In Tunisia, for instance, where the Arab spring started, it was the self-immolation of a Masters Degree holder, Mohamed Bouazizi, who was a street peddler that sparked the revolution.
But I bet that if Bouazizi were to be Nigerian, his fellow young people would have called him a fool. This is because Nigerian youths have changed for the worse. They are not only getting poorer mentally, their self esteem has been battered and they are becoming tolerant of suffering, exploitation and rule breaking.
All these stem from the kind of education they are getting today.
The quality is hopelessly poor.
Quality education is supposed to be total, from teaching literacy to building the self esteem required to survive in real life. However, it is unfortunate that our education has been unable to inspire this crucial ingredient of survival. The implication is the production of graduates who cannot stand to assert their rights, let alone confronting constituted authorities, demanding a proper cause of action.
And that was what we saw that played out in the NIS incident. If our graduates had proper training, they would not conduct themselves in such a manner that would result in a stampede in the first place.
It is reprehensible that Nigerian youths should go ahead to sit for that same test that resulted in the death of their fellow youths In other climes, right there and then, the test venues would turn to protest grounds and those at home would join them.
The truth of the matter is that there is no hope for a change where the young cannot get angry. Their collective spleens have become numb and the anger that should spur a reasonable change can no longer be felt by them.

Super Eagles head coach, Stephen Keshi will finally appear on Tuesday before the technical committee of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to introduce the highly-awaited list of 35-man provisional list for the 2014 World Cup squad.
The list has already been in the center of media coverage for weeks, with both the technical committee and the coach appearing to have collision on the choice of players.
Chairman of the technical committee, Chris Green has recently stated:
"While we believe that only players that are playing well for their clubs should be invited because the World Cup is not a tea party, our job is a simple task. Keshi has the overall decision on who goes to Brazil and fits into his World Cup plan."
Meanwhile one of the committe members, who pleaded anonymity, told Leadership that they would not allow Keshi to name any of his misfire CHAN player for Brazil's World Cup.
According to him, the committee will ensure that "the players the coach will invite for the World Cup merit the invitation".
It would be recalled that the renowned Nigerian coach had previously mentioned that he may give opportunity to some of the boys that distinguished themselves in the South Africa's tournament to fight for place in his World Cup squad.
As for the current attitude towards Keshi, the indications have recently emerged that the NFF may sack the coach after 2014 Brazil because of him neglecting their advice and assistance ahead of the tournament. ahead of the
