Can you believe Diane Kruger is 40? Neither can we. Since her first stint on the red carpet promoting Troy back in 2004, the German actress has never strayed far from our radar. Whether she’s lighting up the Cannes Croisette, sitting front row at fashion week or running errands in her native New York, Kruger has unfailingly been our go-to girl for brave, eclectic fashion with a dash of effortless cool.
She doesn’t have a stylist, because- she says- “so often in Hollywood, women have stylists and they all look the same,” and she always dresses for women, because “it’s so easy to please a man.” A woman after our own hearts.
She has previously told designer e-tailer MyTheresa that “the beauty of fashion and clothing is that you get to choose what you wear. You're never going to see me in a low-cut mini dress with flatform plastic heels." It’s this self-awareness and individual approach that makes her a brilliant muse.
Here’s what we have learnt from her so far...
It all comes back to the basics
Her red carpet persona may constantly be evolving and nodding to trends, but Diane’s off-duty uniform relies on a catalogue of basics she has built up over time. She was photographed in June 2012 and then June 2015 wearing the same Comme des Garçons striped tee, denim and heeled boot combo, and is rarely seen straying from her trusty denim, cotton and khaki staples.
Hats are often overlooked
Trilbys, baker boy caps and fedoras have all found their way into Diane’s arsenal over the years. And we have to say, hats off! Each one adds a jaunty air to her day looks, one similar to the beatnik bow ties she has also favoured over the years.
It takes a confident dresser to wear a black baker boy cap with a Chanel couture dress, and for that we salute her. For an easy entry point into the headwear game, try one of these straw hats to shade you in style this summer.
Sheer doesn’t have to mean sexy
Sheer fashion is one of Diane’s calling cards, but don’t let that mislead you. The former model experiments with lace, chiffon and fabrics that are beautifully translucent, but are draped in such a way that they never expose too much.
She never tires of see-through hemlines, but always compensates flashing flesh with texture, pattern or something to make the look utterly creative, as well as flattering.
Texture is just as important as print
Feathers, sequins, ruffles, lace; Diane has dipped a toe into every pool of craft and embellishment. In fact, you are more likely to see the star in a monotone dress with 3D pizzazz than a patterned gown. Food for thought for those of us who automatically assume that print makes for standout occasionwear.
Back it up
You’re unlikely to see Kruger in a plunging neck gown, because she’d rather divert your attention to the back of her dress, where you’ll find a myriad of embellishment techniques. From scooped backs to bejewelled buttons and draped beading, it’s all about having a back-up plan for Diane.
It pays to be a beauty chameleon
On a press trail for a new film, Diane will always experiment with myriad up and down 'dos. She is partial to plaits, halo braids, Hollywood waves, loose curls, Fifties victory rolls and top knots... we could go on, so varied is her approach.
Give her a vibrant new lip colour and she’ll try it, no questions asked. In short, she is a constant reminder that a slight tweak in your beauty regime can transform your whole look. Never rest on your make-up bag laurels.
Trousers can have greater impact than dresses
The embroidered Chanel couture look that Diane wore to the 2015 Met Gala (main picture) is our favourite look from the star. Do we really need to explain why? It was shortly followed by the red Donna Karan Atelier dress-cum-jumpsuit she wore at the Vanity Fair Oscars party. Both looks show that well-cut trousers can have real impact as evening wear. And, crucially, it means that you will never have a same dress disaster again.
Fashion gives you a voice
At the 2015 Golden Globes, Diane Kruger off-set her silver Emilia Wickstead gown with an A4 poster reading ‘Je Suis Charlie’. Showing her support for the 17 people murdered by Islamist terrorists in Paris, Kruger also aligned herself with the #AskHerMore campaign and proved that clothes can be used to direct an intelligent message.
What a beautiful woman! She does have her own style and shows us an example of charm and inner beauty. Our modern life brings not only pleasant surprises to a woman.
