A group, Coalition of Civil Societies and Media Executives for Good Governance, has threatened to mobilize and commence recall proceedings against Senator Melaye over his row with Senator Tinubu – The group says Melaye’s utterance against Senator Tinubu is un-parliamentary – The group calls on Melaye to tender an unreserved apology immediately Senator Dino Melaye has been criticized for allegedly threatening to beat up Senator Oluremi Tinubu. Reacting to the drama that played out at the Senate on Tuesday, July 12, the Coalition of Civil Societies and Media Executives for Good Governance (COCMEGG) called on Melaye to tender an unreserved apology immediately. According to the group, Melaye’s utterance is un-parliamentary, Vanguard reports.
In a joint statement, the president of the group, Kenneth Aigbegbele and the secretary, James Okoronkwo, said Melaye is “a huge disappointment to his constituency, the Senate and the Nigeria’s democracy.” The statement added: “Dino Melaye is a huge disappointment to his constituency, the Senate and the Nigeria’s democracy. It is unfortunate and reprehensible that Senator Dino had resorted to maligning the constituted authority on whose platform he rose to become a senator. “We therefore condemn this despicable un-parliamentary behaviour in its entirety and demand an unreserved apology on the floor of the Senate, failure of which, we will be forced to mobilize and commence recall proceedings against him.”
Following an alleged plot to impeach President Muhammadu Buhari, Senator Tinubu was said to have warned the Senate to guard against being reduced to a kindergarten court where senators could just issue childish threats, and called on senators to close ranks and seek reconciliation among themselves. That was when Melaye flew into a rage. “You can’t talk to me the way you talk to other people; you must respect yourself,’’ Melaye was said to have roared. The statement caused a commotion on the floor as senators but Senate president Bukola Saraki immediately moved to beg and call for peace.
