After the LG G Flex in 2013 and Samsung Galaxy Note
Edge in 2014, the smartphone market is gearing up for
even more curved display devices in 2015. LG
Electronics may announce a new smartphone, the LG
G Flex 2, at the 2015 Consumer Electronics Show in
January, Android Authority reports.
LG G Flex 2 is expected to be an overhaul of the
original G Flex, which was released last October,
featuring a screen with a horizontal curve. While few
details are known about the device, insiders told the
publication the G Flex 2 probably would be smaller
than its predecessor and feature a “high-resolution
plastic-based OLED screen.”
Adding to older rumors that a coming G Flex successor
might actually have the ability to be flexible and bend
up to 90 degrees, sources divulged to Android
Authority that the LG G Flex 2 might include a “self-
healing coating.”
The 2015 International CES takes place from Jan. 6 to 9
in Las Vegas and will showcase a plethora of new
technology on which the industry will focus in the
coming year. While there are few curved or flexible
display smartphones on the market, many
manufacturers, including LG and Samsung Electronics
Co., hope to increase interest in such devices in 2015.
In addition to the Galaxy Note Edge, Samsung also
released the Galaxy Round smartphone in Korea in
2013 as its first attempt at a curved display mobile
device. But LG was the first manufacturer to bring
curved displays to the market with the LG G Flex. The
device is more prominently available overseas, but is
available in the U.S. at the mobile networks AT&T , T-
Mobile, Sprint and a few other retailers. LG has also
delved into making curved display television sets ,
featuring flexible OLED displays.
LG is the fourth-largest smartphone manufacturer in
terms of shipping as of the third quarter, according to
the IDC and Strategy Analytic. The company has seen
impressive growth with in sales due to its G series and
L series smartphones.
The company hopes some management restructuring
will help it keep its momentum in the coming year. LG
announced Thursday the appointment of a new CEO of
LG Mobile, Juno Cho, who will assume his role starting
Jan. 1. LG’s current CEO Jong-seok Park will become
the company’s chief technology adviser.
